3월 27일 - 뮤즈

There is a muse, but he’s not going to come fluttering down into your writing room and scatter creative fairy-dust all over your typewriter or computer station. He lives in the ground. He’s a basement guy. You have to descend to his level, and once you get down there you have to furnish an apartment for him to live in. You have to do all the grunt labor, in other words, while the muse sits and smokes cigars and admires his bowling trophies and pretends to ignore you. Do you think this is fair? I think it’s fair. He may not be much to look at, that muse-guy, and he may not be much of a conversationalist (what I get out of mine is mostly surely grunts, unless he’s on duty), but he’s got the inspiration. It’s right that you should do all the work and burn all the midnight oil, because the guy with the cigar and the little wigs has got a bag of magic. There’s stuff in there that can change your life.

 

뮤즈는 있다. 하지만 그는 네 서재에 날라와 너의 타자기나 컴퓨터 스테이션에 창조의 마법의 가루를 뿌리려 오지 않을 것이다. 그는 지하에 산다. 그는 지하실 사람이다. 네가 직접 그를 만나러 지하로 가야 하고, 지하로 내려간 다음에는 그가 거주할 아파트를 꾸며야 한다. 뮤즈가 앉아서 시가를 피우고 자신의 볼링 트로피를 감상하며 너를 무시하는 척할 때 너는 끙끙대며 온갖 일해야 한다. 이게 공평하다고 생각하는가. 나는 공평하다고 생각한다. 뮤즈 녀석은 불품도 없고 대화하는 법도 잘 모르지만 (내 뮤즈에게서 듣는 건 일하지 않을 땐 대부분 툴툴거리는 소리다) 그는 영감을 갖고 있다. 네가 모든 일을 다하고 밤새 등불의 기름을 다 태우는게 맞는데 왜냐면 시가를 물고 작은 날개를 달고있는 그 녀석은 마법 한가방을 가지고 있기때문이다. 그 가방에 들어있는 것들은 네 삶을 바꿀수 있다.
