In this sense, all wrongness is optimism. We err because we believe, above all, in ourselves: no matter how often we have gotten things wrong in the past, we evince an abiding and touching faith in our own stories and theories. Traditionally, we are anxious to deny that those stories and theories are stories and theories — that we must rely on our own imperfect representations to make sense of the world, and are therefore destined to err. But, to risk a bit of blasphemy, stories and theories may be all we have that God does not. They are the hallmark of two of our highest human endeavors, art and science, and through them we can imagine new realities.

이런 의미에서, 모든 틀림은 낙관주의다. 우리는 무엇보다 자신을 믿기에 틀린다. 얼마나 많이 틀려왔든 상관없이 우리는 우리 자신의 이야기와 이론을 끈덕지게 믿는다. 전통적으로 우리는 우리가 믿는 이야기와 이론들이 그저 이야기와 이론들이라고 부정하기 싫어한다. 그리고 세상을 이해하기 위해 불완전한 머리속의 구상에 의존해야 하고 따라서 틀리도록 되어 있다는 점도 말이다 . 하지만 약긴 신성모독을 감수한다면 이야기와 이론들이야 말로 우리가 갖고 있지만 신은 갖고 있지 않은 것이다. 이는 가장 훌륭한 인간의 역작인 예술과 과학을 가능케한 것이고 이를 통해 우리는 새로운 현실을 상상한다.
